for Trombone Quartet
Order at Just for Brass
The essence of this work is the opposition of two musical ideas: slow, polyphonic chorale-like sections, and fast, fiery allegro sections. This juxtaposition of ideas facilitates both the powerful intensity and sonorous beauty that only a trombone quartet can deliver. The title, Diasphere, is meant to evoke this contrast. The piece is a musical conversation between the four players, demanding from each great stamina, technical facility, range, and lyricism. Diasphere was commissioned by Tom Gibson and the Mercer University Trombone Quartet, and later toured by the Trombones of the St. Louis Symphony.
